Suboxone Treatment Near Me: What is it?

The opioid epidemic continues to take heavy tolls on many community populations throughout the United States. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “more than 760,000 people have died since 1999 from a drug overdose. Two out of three drug overdose deaths in 2018 involved an opioid”. Back then, pharmaceutical companies believed that such opioids could not cause addiction. With an increase of prescription opioid medications, many Americans slowly became addicted before it was clear that there was a problem developing. Now, many communities around the country have been plagued with widespread opioid addictions causing a strain on addiction recovery services in those areas. One of those communities is actually closer than you think; Orange County New York.

Opioid abuse has no demographic, economic, geographical limitations. It can and will affect all age groups and walks of life. Right here in our own community, overdoses involving any opioids have been above the state-wide average. The chart below comes from the New York  State Opioid Dashboard - County Level: Orange County.

The red line represents Orange County while the green line represents the rest of New York, except New York City. Orange County has been trending above the average opioid crude overdose death rate from 2010 to 2016, then spiked from 2017 to 2018. With this specific amount of opioid-related overdoses, the strain has been put on the addiction treatment centers within the county. Even though there are multiple addiction treatment centers within the county, the COVID-19 pandemic put people through so much stress that an overwhelming amount of people relapsed. The purpose of this blog is to raise awareness of additional services out there, like Cross Valley Health & Medicine.

Cross Valley Health & Medicine: Medication Assisted Treatment Program

Cross Valley Health & Medicine has two providers on staff who are accepting new patients for their Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program. Dr. Paul Saladino is dual-board certified in Addiction Medicine and Internal Medicine while Christian Plaza is a family nurse practitioner. Both providers have completed the credits to become a Buprenorphine Waivered Practitioner through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSA). Both Cross Valley Health & Medicine providers are able to prescribe to patients buprenorphine, a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the treatment of an opioid use disorder (OUD). Along with buprenorphine, the providers may use another medication called suboxone which is “a prescription medicine used to treat adults who are addicted to (dependent on) opioid drugs (either prescription or illegal) as part of a complete treatment program that also includes counseling and behavioral therapy”. The providers take pride in the fact they went above and beyond to become more certified to help the communities they live in.
